In recent years, the term GPL-1 drug has become a part of everyday conversation for many Americans, as these medications are used to facilitate weight loss. However, there is crucial information users should be aware of…
Originally designed for individuals with type two diabetes to help manage blood sugar levels, GPL-1 drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro have been increasingly used for weight loss purposes.
The effectiveness of these drugs in reducing food intake and controlling appetite has led many to achieve significant weight loss.
Yet, what impact does this weight loss have on other parts of the body, particularly bones, joints, and muscles?
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian Nwannunu has shared his insights with Yahoo! creators regarding what patients should understand…

Dr. Nwannunu informs the publication that he considers the medications beneficial for certain patients, but acknowledges that the situation is not straightforward.
He points out that the reduction in weight is beneficial for joints. “For every one pound of extra body weight, four times the amount of force is exerted through the knee joint,” he explains, noting that the alleviation of pain could be transformative for users.

However, there’s a downside. While the drugs assist in fat reduction, they also contribute to muscle loss.
“Excessive muscle loss can impact joints and bone density, potentially leading to joint injuries or fragility fractures,” Dr. Nwannunu tells Yahoo! creators.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, Osteoporosis “is a disease that weakens your bones and makes them much more likely to fracture.” Those over 50 and postmenopausal women face the highest risk.
This risk may increase if these individuals are also using GPL-1 medications.
Though research is still in early stages, recent findings presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ annual meeting, highlighted by NBC News, suggest these drugs might increase the risk of Osteoporosis.
Dr. Nwannunu advises those at higher risk to ensure adequate protein intake and engage in resistance training.
Resistance training, which involves exercises against some form of resistance, doesn’t necessarily require heavy weights. It could include bodyweight exercises or the use of resistance bands.
As always, individuals with questions or concerns should consult with their healthcare provider.
