Michelle Obama’s brother shares how he curbed his kids’ arguments with a rule that they must ‘have to kiss’

Michelle Obama’s older brother has shared insights into his parenting approach, highlighting an unusual house rule that effectively put an end to his sons’ sibling rivalries.

Craig Robinson, a former college basketball coach and current co-host of the podcast IMO with his sister, discussed this concept during a conversation with comedian and actor Will Ferrell, who was a guest on the show.

The discussion shifted to parenting and discipline, with Ferrell reminiscing about how his own family managed conflicts between siblings. Robinson then shared a personal anecdote regarding his two sons.

Robinson recounted how his boys frequently fought, even admitting there had been “one punch” thrown in the past. However, the dynamic changed when he and his wife introduced a new rule for handling disputes.

“You guys can fight, but you have to kiss and make up on the mouth,” Robinson said he told his sons, noting that this unusual consequence quickly ended the fighting.

Ferrell found the tactic amusing and complimented Robinson, asking about the origin of the idea.

Robinson credited his wife, Kelly, with devising the strategy, rather than himself.

Michelle Obama, as co-host, also expressed her approval of her brother’s parenting technique, saying ‘well done.’

This exchange has resonated with podcast listeners, many of whom appreciate the psychological reasoning behind the strategy. The idea is based on the notion that children, especially boys entering their teenage years, would prefer to avoid a fight rather than face an uncomfortable and embarrassing situation with a sibling.

Craig Robinson, 63, is a former professional basketball player and coach, having led the men’s basketball programs at Brown University and Oregon State University.

As Michelle Obama’s older brother, he played a pivotal role in her initial introduction to former President Barack Obama, having played basketball with him before the couple started dating.

Since stepping away from coaching, Robinson has become a well-known figure in his own right, co-hosting IMO with his sister since 2023.

The podcast features the siblings addressing listener questions on various topics, including relationships and family life, often bringing in celebrity guests for candid, unscripted discussions.

The episode with Will Ferrell was among the show’s more light-hearted ones, with the Anchorman star reflecting on his upbringing and fatherhood, alongside the now-popular parenting story.
