Greta Thunberg barred from Venice following ‘disrespectful’ incident related to historic canal

Climate activist Greta Thunberg is now potentially facing a ban from Venice following a notable protest event over the weekend.

Thunberg frequently garners media attention for her speeches and demonstrations that aim to highlight the necessity of governmental action on climate change. Recently, Thunberg, alongside activists from Extinction Rebellion, engaged in a prominent demonstration throughout Italy to capture public attention.

In a scene reminiscent of Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day, numerous rivers and canals throughout the city were colored green.

Thunberg, who joined the protest with the group on Saturday, received a fine of €150 (approximately $173 or £132) for her involvement and was prohibited from entering the city for 48 hours. A similar penalty was imposed on thirty-five other activists.

The group shared protest footage on social media, defending their actions by stating they used an eco-friendly dye to highlight the severe impacts of climate change.

The activists also criticized the Italian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, for their resistance to ambitious climate initiatives during Cop30.

On Instagram, the Italian branch of Extinction Rebellion expressed their dissatisfaction regarding the treatment of some protesters and elaborated on their demonstration’s intent.

The post stated: “On the morning of Saturday 22 November, with XR Udine, XR Trieste, and XR Gorizia we dyed the waters of the Grande Canal (Trieste), along with the waters of 10 other Italian cities, to highlight the ongoing ecocide.

“We used fluorescein — a non-toxic, biodegradable compound.

“Eight people were detained for several hours for identity verification despite having immediately provided their documents upon police request and were released with multiple complaints.

“With the slogan ‘Stop the Ecocide’, we condemn the ecocidal policies of the Italian Government and urge everyone to pay attention to the devastating effects of climate collapse.

“Ecocide refers to the devastation of ecosystems for economic gain, the destruction of natural resources due to wars, and governmental inaction on climate change.”

Luca Zaia, the governor of the Veneto region, criticized the climate group’s actions, describing them as ‘a disrespectful act towards our city, its history, and its fragility.’ He further commented, “It’s a gesture that risks having consequences for the environment.”

Nevertheless, some social media users have applauded the group for their bold stance and hope such demonstrations will compel governments to enact meaningful change.
