Donald Glover, 42, describes symptoms noticed before stroke and discovery of heart defect by doctors

Donald Glover has recently spoken about a significant health issue he faced last year, which led to the cancellation of his global tour. The 42-year-old, known for his roles as an actor, comedian, rapper, and filmmaker performing under the name Childish Gambino, had to abruptly end ‘The New World Tour.’ An unspecified medical condition required surgery and recovery time, leaving fans from Ireland to New Zealand disappointed.

During his comeback performance at Tyler the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, Glover disclosed that doctors discovered “a hole in my heart.” This revelation followed his hospitalization after a performance in New Orleans on September 7, 2024.

Glover had exhibited serious symptoms, which he later learned were caused by a stroke.

“I had a really bad pain in my head, and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well,” he recounted to the audience on Saturday night, which included many watching remotely.

With music softly playing in the background, Glover shared his reaction to the diagnosis with the audience at Dodger Stadium.

“I went to the hospital, and the doctor was like ‘you had a stroke’,” he explained, humorously adding, “the first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx,'” who also had a similar health event.

He continued by saying, “That was only the second thing, the first thing was that I’m letting everyone down.”

Glover elaborated on undergoing two surgeries after the heart issue was identified, which brought to mind the saying ‘everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one.’

Reflecting on the ordeal, he encouraged the Camp Flog Gnaw audience: “You should be living your life how you want. If we have to do this again, it can only get better.”

Fans watching online were quick to praise Glover’s heartfelt speech, with many noting how his ‘incredible’ words brought them to tears.

In light of the tour’s cancellation, Glover had even allowed fans to help choose parts of his set list, which was well-received.

One fan commented: “Childish Gambino really still got it man. One of the best and most underrated performers of the generation.”

However, the performance also reignited concerns that Glover might retire his Childish Gambino persona, as he had previously hinted before ‘The New World Tour’ about possibly stepping away.

He mentioned to the New York Times: “It really was just like, oh, it’s done. It’s not fulfilling. And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.”
