Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye in 2021, has given an interview that has left fans uneasy due to a notably somber comment he made.
Ye was approached for an impromptu interview by the Mystery Fashionist blog while in Tokyo for a 10-day pop-up event featuring renowned designer Gosha Rubchinskiy’s latest creations.
When AJay Porter asked him to introduce himself, Ye responded in a detached tone, “I’m Ye from Chi…”, while fixating his gaze on the ground.
Rubchinskiy, who had previously collaborated with Ye’s fashion brand, took on the role of head designer in 2023 following Adidas’ decision to sever ties with Yeezy. This occurred after Ye posted an inflammatory social media message threatening to go “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE.”
The Russian designer amicably departed from Ye’s company earlier this year, as demonstrated by Ye’s unexpected presence in Tokyo. Despite being present, Ye’s demeanor was not uplifting, worrying fans further with his subsequent replies.
Porter inquired about Ye’s outfit for the high-fashion event and asked him to rate it. Maintaining his characteristic confidence but in a muted tone, Ye declared, “It’s always a 10/10, I got the original Yeezy 950 boots on,” gesturing to his footwear.
Considering the rest of his attire, which included a blue denim shirt, jeans, and a black bomber jacket, he added, “Gosha did the pop up today so the rest of it’s all Gosha.”
Despite having faced difficult times—such as a divorce, a custody battle, and social isolation due to controversial statements—the rapper was asked a seemingly harmless question that took a dark turn.
Porter queried, “What’s a fashion trend you regret participating in?” Ye’s one-word response was unsettling.
“Life,” he answered.
This sparked concern among the video’s five million viewers, with comments like, “Ye tired man,” and “He looks so sad.”
Ye, 45, has kept a low profile in recent months, with a rare public appearance in Tokyo when Travis Scott invited him on stage for a surprise performance.
For some of the 300,000 followers of Mystery Fashionist, Ye’s reflective answer confirmed his identity, as one fan remarked, “I almost thought this ain’t Ye until he answered ‘Life’.” Conversely, others saw his comment as genuine, with someone noting, “He ain’t lying lol. It’s rough out here!!”
