Tom Holland, known for his role in the blockbuster series Spider-Man, found himself in a new and challenging environment while working with renowned director Christopher Nolan. The actor recently opened up about his experiences on the set of Nolan’s upcoming film, ‘The Odyssey’, slated for release on July 17.
Holland shares the screen with stars like Anne Hathaway and Matt Damon. Despite what one might assume, his initial experience on set was far from comfortable.
In an interview with Fandango, Holland, 30, confessed to feeling as though Nolan was displeased with his performance, particularly during a tense scene with co-star John Bernthal.
“The first day was likely one of the most intimidating moments of my career,” Holland confessed.

Holland and Bernthal found themselves navigating unknown territory under the direction of Nolan, who has twice won an Academy Award. The confusion arose because Nolan repeatedly called for cuts during an important scene, leading Holland to worry about his performance.
However, the frequent interruptions were due to a technical aspect of using IMAX cameras.
Holland shared, “I didn’t know that it only ran for 3 minutes,” referring to the cameras.
“So I remember you would continue cutting. And I was with John like why does he keep cutting?”
The actor’s misunderstanding of the camera limitations led him to wrongly assume his acting was at fault.
He continued, “And I like in my head I’m like does he not like what we’re doing? Like what is happening?”
Fortunately, a crew member clarified that the IMAX cameras needed frequent reloading because they could only record three minutes of film at a time.
Holland recalled, “And then I remember it was actually George Cottle that was like no no no. There’s only 3 minutes in the match,” which provided much relief.
Holland wasn’t alone in this confusion; Lupita Nyong’o also encountered similar misunderstandings while filming.
Despite the shaky start, Holland’s first day ended positively. Nolan’s gesture of a comforting hug and pat on the back assured him of his capabilities.
Reflecting on the experience, Holland concluded, “And when I left that day, it wasn’t until I left the set that I was like, ‘Oh, I can I can totally do this.”
He added, “Like, I can swim in these waters’,” expressing his newfound confidence.
