Grandma and stranger celebrate a decade of unexpected Thanksgiving tradition

The heartwarming story of a grandmother and a stranger who have turned an accidental text into a cherished Thanksgiving tradition continues to capture hearts.

A decade ago, Wanda Dench, a grandmother from Arizona, intended to text her grandson about Thanksgiving plans but mistakenly sent the message to someone she didn’t know.

What could have been a simple mix-up turned into an annual gathering.

The text reached teenager Jamal Hinton, who asked for a photo to confirm Dench’s identity. After realizing her mistake, Dench still extended her invitation, and Hinton’s lighthearted reply set the stage for a long-lasting friendship.

Despite the initial error, Hinton humorously asked if he could still join for a meal, and Dench welcomed him, keeping her invitation open for the Thanksgiving celebration.

Since then, the two have met every year, with 2025 marking their tenth Thanksgiving together. They recently shared with People how this unexpected encounter has impacted their lives and brought them closer.

Dench reflected on the experience: “I know it was fate. All the signs beforehand just fell into place. I feel every day I’m grateful and blessed because I would’ve never met somebody as wonderful as Jamal just randomly like that.”

To commemorate their tenth gathering, they are collaborating with Green Giant, a brand celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Hinton expressed his excitement: “Partnering with them for our 10th year makes this even more special.

“Sharing our 10th year — alongside Green Giant’s 100th anniversary — makes this holiday feel especially meaningful.”

Hinton also mentioned how their story continues to bring joy worldwide, gaining renewed attention each Thanksgiving.

He added: “It’s amazing every year.

“People get so excited to see us. As a kid, I always dreamed of being famous, so to know our story brings joy to people — it means everything.”

Dench, on the other hand, admitted feeling slightly apprehensive about their recurring viral status.

She humorously remarked: “I used to think people might get tired of us hogging up the news.

“But every time someone says the kindest thing, I’m reminded that we bring joy. That’s worth everything.”

While many Thanksgiving customs fade over time, this particular tradition continues to thrive, bringing warmth and happiness each year.
