Joining the mile-high club is often regarded as a cliché, but how frequently do passengers actually attempt it on a flight?
While the idea might seem appealing, a closer look reveals the less glamorous reality of the situation.
Consider the cramped, often unsanitary plane lavatory, where space is limited to awkward maneuvers rather than anything remotely romantic.
Additionally, there’s the inevitable walk back to your seat, with fellow passengers observing your synchronized exit, nullifying any hope of discretion.
Moreover, let’s not forget the cabin crew, who have seen it all too often to find any amusement or allure in the act.
Recently, a flight attendant shared insights on how frequently people attempt to join the mile-high club and the typical response when they’re caught.

Mandy Smith, a flight attendant, has authored Cabin Fever: The Sizzling Secrets of a Virgin Air Hostess, detailing various aspects of airline work, including the frequency of mile-high club attempts.
Contrary to popular belief, she disclosed that these occurrences are less common than assumed.
“I would say one in twenty or thirty flights,” she mentioned. “Not really that often.”
Regarding the protocol for handling such situations, she noted that staff usually just knock on the bathroom door to request a halt.
“It’s worse when you’ve got children on board and it’s in the daytime,” she explained.
However, during night flights, Smith admitted she might be more lenient: “If it’s on a night flight and they’re being discreet, I probably wouldn’t even interrupt them if I’m honest.”
Despite this, she recounted an uncomfortable episode involving a passenger eager to join the mile-high club.
“One of my friends had a situation where there was a young lady of 18 who was quite determined to join the mile-high club, and she just grabbed anyone,” Smith shared.
Even after crew intervention and a return to her seat, the passenger persisted.
“She sat back down in her seat, and then about half an hour later she was back up with another chap trying to join the mile-high club again,” Mandy recounted.
“My friend said she went to speak to her parents, because she was actually traveling with her mom and dad.
“She was only 18 bless her, she didn’t do it again.”
One can only imagine how awkward the conversation was on the drive home from the airport…
